5Excellence in a Small Package
By M. hopkins
When my 10-Year old Alpine V12s finally threw in the towel recently, I was back in the market for a new amplifier. The V12s could produce a minimum of 618 watts RMS at 12 Volts (according to the original birth sheet). I split this between a component set and one or two 10" sealed subwoofer(s) receiving about 438 watts. This was power with power to spare.Being older and perhaps wiser, I was hoping to drop the current load on the car and also cut down on the complexity and space use of my current car audio install (which recycled some old components but added a new head unit). After shopping around I decided on seeking a 4-channel Amp which could produce at least 50 watts a channel, or 200 watts bridged. This is because my sealed 10" subwoofer was chosen back in a day when I was after more power. Rated for 300-600 watts RMS, I really needed to make sure I had enough power to drive it, otherwise I would have to go and find a good lower power sub too (the sound quality of the sub is spectacular so this wasn't ideal). More importantly, I didn't want to spend a lot on a more powerful amp, tempting as that can be.I searched all over the place, and was surprised to find out that this Alpine Class-D is actually a total beast. PASMAG's review was also favorable, and there I learned that the power was somewhat conservatively rated, and in fact, with the car running, it will produce something like 60 watts RMS/Channel and about 214 watts RMS/bridged. It also uses most of Alpine's best Class-D circuitry from its PDX line while settling for a cheaper chassis. But priced well below $200, it seemed like a smart choice. I expected a flat frequency response, good headroom when pushed, and great sound quality.PROS:-Once set up, this amp drives my 5 1/4 components with authority. While I do have to crank my deck up higher than before to reach extreme sound levels, my ears wimp out before this amp does (a good thing).-Sound quality exceeded my expectations, and actually seems better than my old V12s (which were top of the line at the time). What a difference a decade makes. V12s were considered a "cold" sound. This amp is definitely more "neutral." My system sounded great before, now I am pumped to go through my library and rediscover it with this amp. Tight, clear, detailed, and smooth. Being as picky as I am, I find no faults so far in this department.-Compact Size, runs cool. Should be able to mount about wherever you want. Even under a seat or behind a big glove box.-Terminals accept 4 gauge wire, amp is fused. End caps help create a cleaner look when you're finished. Also, uses regular screw-type terminals rather than proprietary terminals as seen on some higher end amps. While those are useful for certain applications, I find that screws are still flexible and reliable.-Useful HP and LP crossovers, little bass boost at a "smart" frequency (about 48-50hz).-I highly doubt a better mix of Class D efficiency, sound quality, and price is out there at the moment.CONS:-The amp did drive my subwoofer well, but I lost the "bump" when listening to rap or electronic. More comment on that below.-Chassis quality is somewhat questionable. Plastic mounting points could break with over-tightening, end caps are also plastic (with tiny screws). The V12s were metal bricks with gold plated terminals and metal mounting points while this thing feels a little on the "cheap" side. Perhaps the Class-D efficiency doesn't need as much heatsink.-No Birthsheet? Others reported receiving one so I was a bit put off to think mine was missing, or skipped. I therefore only have a rough idea what the true power levels are of this amp. Didn't come with any extra fuses or screw terminals (in case you stripped or lost one) like the old V12s did - more cost cutting.-Only 1-year warranty (not a problem however if this product goes another 5-10 years). As mentioned, the subwoofer was a 10" in a sealed box and required about 300-600 watts RMS according to original specs. Therefore it was a lot to ask of a small 4-channel amp to drive it. While it did sound good, I decided to pick up a JL Audio "microsub" after auditioning several different products at a local audio store. A ported design rated up to 250 watts RMS, the 8" W3 blew me away with its sound quality and ability to "bump" when asked. Ported designs do tend to be louder per-watt, but at a sacrifice of some sound quality. So far, I find that this sub treats jazz, rock, and electronic/sampled type music extremely well. It has a great tone, and very even response - very comparable to my previous sound. Best of all, it seems to work well with a little less power - even in a sedan. It is expensive however. The ported 8" W1 box is about 80% the equal of the W3, but did not seem to provide the same low frequency impact or general texture of the W3. But for the big price difference, I would recommend it to someone that wants real strong bass reproduction without a huge box or amp. But don't think of these subs as miracle workers - if you are an SPL freak or want to watch your windows explode, you'll want to stick with higher power and bigger / more drivers. If you are after some volume and listen to a diverse range of music, you'll love these little guys.In short, this amp seems like it could easily drive 4 speakers, a 3-way setup which includes front components and a subwoofer, or even 2 subwoofers. Even with my somewhat higher speaker ratings (100 RMS for the front components, now 250 RMS for the 8" subwoofer), I find that there is enough power to drive the entire system to levels that probably damage hearing. Excellent sound quality, great power, and a great price. Thanks Alpine!

5Rated for more power than it was specified
By Jewfromdahood
Ok great little amp. Apparently Alpine give a certificate for every amp and how much power it was tested to actually put out. Well my amp was rated for 75 Watts RMS @ 2 ohms and 50 Watts RMS @ 4 ohms. Well the certificate says it is rated for 113 Watts @ 2 ohms which means it should put out about 75 Watts RMS @ 4 ohms! Great product from alpine!

5Great Amp
By David
Super clean sound, great power (mine came rated at 100w per channel based on the "birth certificate" instead of 75w), small package, haven't had a problem no matter how hard it gets pushed. Alpine supposedly really focused on making these amps (and the next series up) super clean sounding with no added noise (hiss, interference, etc), and they really succeed. Very impressed. Also, while this depends on your speakers, my old amp required me to tweak the head unit eq quite a bit, but this amp I have everything pretty much flat. I would think this shows that this amp has a super flat frequency response, while apparently the old amp didn't. Just shows that quality counts...
